Wallenius SOL takes over shipping company Mann Lines

Takeover on the European RoRo market: Wallenius SOL swallows up the shipping company Mann Lines – both well-known names in German ports.

The joint venture founded in 2019 by the Wallenius Group and Swedish Orient Line, which recently announced a stronger commitment to container shipping, is thus taking a further step towards growth.

The acquisition of UK-based Mann Lines “significantly expands the company’s customer base, service offering, local expertise and presence in key markets”, according to a statement today.

Wallenius SOL is primarily active in the northern Baltic Sea, but also serves Lübeck Travemünde and Western European hubs, for example. The fleet currently comprises five RoRo vessels. Mann Lines, which specializes in RoRo and container shipping, logistics and freight forwarding, recently expanded a RoRo line via Bremerhaven and is waiting for a newbuild from Italy.

The ship is being built by Cantieri Navali Visentini in Italy. The shipyard is part of the Visentini family group of companies – as is Visemar, which is the owner of the newbuild and is chartering it out to Mann Lines. This was also the case with the “Freyja”

Mann Lines also makes in “Breakbulk”

Elvir Dzanic, CEO of Wallenius SOL, said that the complementary routes of the two companies improve capacity and frequency, and the only slight overlaps in the customer base enable the company to “convince around 200 new customers of the joint offer”.

At Mann Lines, “breakbulk” cargo also accounts for around 30-40% of the cargo mix.

The carrier currently serves the ports of Harwich, Rotterdam, Cuxhaven, Paldiski, Turku and Bremerhaven. In principle, the main cargoes shipped are steel on Mafi trailers, timber on Mafi trailers and paper on Mafi trailers.

There are also cars. Mann Lines handles 100% of the car transportation in Estonia for two car manufacturers, a total of around 80-90 cars per trip.

As part of the takeover, Wallenius SOL also plans to integrate offices in Estonia, Latvia and the UK and is expanding its presence in Finland, Germany and the Benelux countries.

Bill Binks, former CEO of Mann Lines and new Vice President WS South at Wallenius SOL, said: “We are very excited to embark on this journey together, pooling our expertise and resources. Under the leadership of Wallenius SOL, new opportunities are opening up for our colleagues and customers that will bring tangible benefits to the Northern European market.”

Mann Lines and Wallenius intend to work closely together “to ensure a seamless transition for employees, customers and partners”. Logistics services for the joint company will be further expanded under the Mann Lines Logistics brand.

“The integration of services will enhance our expertise, expand our offering and foster thriving partnerships. With Mann Lines Logistics’ knowledge and many years of experience as an operator of container services in Northern Europe, we are well equipped to provide even greater value to the industries and societies we serve,” says Elvir Dzanic.
