Wagenborg orders MPP-Easymax newbuild no. 6

The Dutch MPP and shortsea shipping company Wagenborg is expanding its newbuild series with an order for another ‘Easymax’ freighter.

It will be the sixth ship in the series and will be built by the Dutch shipyard Royal Niestern Sander. Wagenborg Shipping and the shipyard have reached an agreement on the start of construction of another 14,000 dwt EasyMax vessel, it has now been announced. This sixth ship in the series is expected to be delivered “in summer 2026”.

The fourth and youngest ship in the series to date was recently christened by Queen Maxima using a drone. “Alexia” follows the sisters “Egbert Wagenborg”, “Maxima” and “Amalia”.

More than 160 ships in the Wagenborg fleet

The shipping company’s fleet now comprises more than 160 ships between 2,800 and 22,000 dwt. Wagenborg is active in the shortsea, MPP and offshore markets, for example, but also in the tugboat business.

With a carrying capacity of more than 14,000 tons and a cargo hold of 625,000 cubic feet, a very efficient ship has been developed together with the shipyard. According to the shipping company, it is the largest type of ship ever built in the north of the Netherlands on the landside of the dykes, as was stated at the delivery of the “Maxima”.

With a length of 149.95 metres, a width of 15.90 metres and a draught of 8.60 metres, the newbuild has the maximum possible dimensions for the Royal Niestern Sander shipyard.

Delivery of the fourth EasyMax is imminent, as has now been confirmed. No. 5 is also already under construction.

Ship has a “extremely low” fuel consumption

Theo Klimp, Fleet Director at the shortsea market leader, said: “The ‘Egbert’, ‘Máxima’ and ‘Amalia’ have proven to be sustainable and successful vessels and, together with their future sisters, will continue to contribute to Wagenborg Shipping’s position as a leading shipping company.”

With an installed power of less than 3,000 kW, the ship has an “extremely low” fuel consumption. “Our focus on energy efficiency has resulted in a saving of over 60% of CO2 emissions compared to other vessels in the industry,” Wagenborg said in a statement.

The multipurpose vessel with ice class 1A has two large box-shaped holds and “a very high capacity for heavy or light cargo, timber and paper as well as open-top cargo”. However, it does not have its own cranes installed.
