Peter Tamm, publisher of the trade journal “HANSA – International Maritime Journal”, has been appointed Honorary Consul of the Federative Republic of Brazil for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, Germany’s northernmost federal state.
In his new role, Peter Tamm – who is a board member of the International Maritime Museum Hamburg – is tasked with strengthening relations between the South American country and northern Germany. He will also act as a point of contact for consular, economic and cultural matters.
Peter Tamm has had a strong network within Hamburg’s business community and the maritime sector for many years. As Chairman of the International Maritime Museum (IMMH), he is particularly committed to promoting maritime history and culture.
Brazil is Germany’s most important trading partner in South America and ranks among the most significant economic hubs for German companies in the region. In German foreign trade, the country ranked 29th out of 238 trading partners in 2025.
Germany mainly exports machinery, vehicles and chemical and pharmaceutical products to Brazil, whilst imports from there consist primarily of agricultural products, foodstuffs and raw materials. Further impetus for economic relations is expected from the EU–Mercosur Agreement, the trade section of which has been provisionally applied since May 2026.
