Tesvolt Ocean introduces flexible battery system

The newly founded joint venture, Tesvolt Ocean, has launched a new battery system called “Kaptein.” What makes it special is that these batteries can be installed anywhere on board.

The battery modules, developed by Tesvolt Ocean, can be installed individually and at any angle, wherever there is space available on the ship. The joint venture, comprised of Germany’s Tesvolt Maritime Solutions and Norway’s Ocean Batteries, headquartered in Lübeck, announced this during the SMM trade fair in Hamburg.

The vibration-resistant storage modules can even be laid on the floor and walked on afterward. According to the developers, the new project addresses a common issue: “Up until now, ships often haven’t had enough space to accommodate batteries with sufficient capacity.” The batteries offer “the lightest weight, the highest energy density, and the fastest charging capability.”

Tesvolt Ocean offers “the highest energy density on the market”

According to Kent Thoresen, CTO of Tesvolt Ocean, the storage system provides “a technological solution to the biggest pain points for shipowners, system integrators, and shipyards.” He further explained, “For example, the range of electric-powered ships remains a challenge for many owners. The limited space aboard ships often prevents enough battery modules from being installed to achieve the desired range.” The Kaptein system offers 246 Wh per liter, “the highest energy density on the market, meaning it requires very little space despite its high capacity.”

Additionally, the “Kaptein” storage system offers the highest continuous C-rate in the maritime industry, with a 4 C rating, resulting in significantly shorter charging times for shipowners. With a weight of only 4.83 kg per kWh of storage capacity, it will also be the lightest battery system available for maritime use.
