The Danish container shipping company Maersk is currently gradually building a new series of 16,000 TEU vessels. The latest addition has now been christened by a representative of the customer Primark.
Elaine Condon, Director of People & Culture at the textile discounter Primark, christened the “Alexandra Maersk” in Felixstowe, UK. The “Alexandra Maersk” is a dual-fuel methanol container ship with a slot capacity of 16,000 TEU.
The British Shipping Minister, Mike Kane, along with representatives of the IMO, customers, and Maersk employees, attended the event at this key British container port. Maersk stated that it has a close logistics and sustainability partnership with Primark.
“Alexandra Maersk” can operate on menthnol
The “Alexandra Maersk” is the sixth ship in the Maersk fleet that can operate on methanol in both its main and auxiliary engines. It is the fifth ship in a series of 18 units scheduled for delivery in 2024 and 2025.
In keeping with the tradition of naming Maersk ships after members of the founding family, the “Alexandra Maersk” is named after Alexandra Mærsk-Møller (1868–1953), an elder sister of A.P. Møller, the founder of A.P. Moller – Maersk.
“This is exactly the kind of innovation we need to create greener, cleaner shipping that is better for people and the planet. Greener transport is one of our top priorities, and we will achieve this by reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions and investing in alternative fuels and technologies,” said UK Minister Mike Kane.
