The starting signal for Posidonia 2026 has been given. One of the maritime industry’s most important events officially opened on Monday with a ceremonial inauguration at the Athens Metropolitan Expo Centre.
Among those attending the opening ceremony were Union of Greek Shipowners President Melina Travlos, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, EU Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
For Posidonia 2026, taking place from 1 to 5 June, organisers expect more than 40,000 industry professionals from around the world. A total of 2,227 exhibitors from 83 countries are showcasing their products and services across 45,000 m² of exhibition space. Compared with the 2024 edition, this represents growth of almost nine per cent. In addition, a record 24 national pavilions are participating. After a lengthy absence, Germany and Italy have returned with official national stands.
AI, decarbonisation and security in focus
Posidonia 2026 is being held against a backdrop of significant geopolitical challenges. Consequently, topics such as maritime security, risk management and the impact of geopolitical developments on shipping are among the key themes. Other focal points include the energy transition, the industry’s pathway to net-zero emissions, digitalisation, cybersecurity, regulatory requirements and the potential use of nuclear energy as a marine fuel.
Technological innovation is also playing a major role. More than 30 companies are presenting artificial intelligence-based applications specifically designed for the maritime sector. Over 100 exhibitors are showcasing technologies and solutions aimed at decarbonising shipping.
The exhibition is accompanied by around 70 conferences, seminars and networking events. The supporting programme began as early as 6 May, making this year’s edition the longest Posidonia in the event’s history. Furthermore, the traditional Posidonia Games have been expanded with the addition of a new cycling event, the “Posidonia Tour”.
The event is held under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping and the Union of Greek Shipowners, with support from the Municipality of Piraeus and the Greek Shipping Cooperation Committee.
Times square salutes Athens
A visible sign of the international importance of Posidonia and Greek shipping came this year from the stock exchange operator NASDAQ. A message displayed on the famous NASDAQ Tower in New York’s Times Square read: “NASDAQ Salutes Posidonia 2026 & Wishes All Participants Great Success!”
Through this initiative, the financial institution recognised both the global reach of the exhibition and the significance of Greek shipping. Numerous Greek shipping companies have been listed on NASDAQ for many years, creating a strong link between international capital markets and the Greek maritime sector. The prominent display in Times Square highlights Greece’s leading position in global shipping and reinforces Posidonia’s status as one of the world’s premier maritime events.
