With the delivery of the “Luxomar”, ESL Shipping has completed its new-build programme for twelve plug-in hybrid coastal vessels.The 5,400 tdw freighter is set to embark on its maiden voyage from India to Europe.
The “Luxomar” was handed over on Tuesday by the Indian shipyard Chowgule and Company. It is the twelfth and final vessel in the so-called ‘Green Coaster’ series and, according to ESL Shipping, marks the completion of one of the largest fleet renewal and growth programmes in the shipping company’s history.
The newbuilds combine battery-hybrid technology with a shore power connection and a ship design optimised for energy efficiency. This is intended to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. In ports, the batteries also enable quiet and locally emission-free operation.
The vessels are Ice Class 1A and are therefore designed for year-round operation in the northern Baltic Sea. According to Frida Rowland, Head of the Coasters division at ESL Shipping, the vessels already in service have met the shipping company’s expectations in day-to-day operations.
“With twelve modern hybrid vessels, we have fundamentally renewed our coaster fleet in recent years,” explained Rowland. The delivery of the “Luxomar” strengthens the shipping company’s competitiveness and lays the foundation for further growth, added ESL Managing Director Mikki Koskinen.
At the same time, ESL Shipping is working on its ‘Green Handy’ investment programme. Both newbuilding programmes are intended to strengthen the company’s position in the market for lower-emission maritime logistics in Northern Europe.
ESL Shipping is part of the Finnish Aspo Group and primarily transports dry bulk cargo in the Baltic Sea region. The fleet comprises around 40 vessels with deadweight tonnages ranging from 4,000 to 25,000 tdw. (JWY)
