New IMO Secretary General presents management team

The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced his leadership team one week after taking office.

Arsenio Dominguez from Panama took office as the 10th elected Secretary-General of the IMO on January 1. He succeeds the South Korean Kitack Lim as IMO Secretary-General, who has led the IMO for two terms.

In his New Year’s message, Dominguez said: “With me as the 10th Secretary-General, I welcome you to join us in an era of progress for the Organization, an era that leads by example and upholds higher values of inclusiveness, diversity and transparency. I look forward to working with you in a new and exciting era to make the maritime sector a better one.” [ds_preview]

Dominguez also now announced the members of theUN Shipping Organization’s Senior Management Committee. It consists of:

  • Azara Prempeh, Director of the Administration Department
  • Hiroyuki Yamada, Director of the Maritime Safety Division (previously Director of the Conferences Division)
  • Dorota Lost-Sieminska, Director of the Legal Affairs and External Relations Department (as before)
  • Heike Deggim, Director of the Marine Environment Division (previously Director of the Maritime Safety Division)
  • Jose Matheickal, Director of the Technical Cooperation Division (previously Director of the Partnerships and Projects Division)
  • Xiaojie Zhang, Director of the Conferences Division (previously Director of the Technical Cooperation Division)
  • Damien Chevallier, Chief of Staff (as before)

This means that the management committee is slightly smaller than under Dominguez’s predecessor Kitack Lim. Under Kitack Lim, the Senior Management Committee most recently consisted of the Secretary General and

  • Heike Deggim, Director of the Maritime Safety Division
  • Hiroyuki Yamada, Director of the Conferences Division
