The Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has ordered propulsion technology from MAN Energy Solutions for four LNG tanker newbuildings.

The four LNG tankers with a capacity of 174,000 m3 will each be equipped with two 5G70ME-GA Mk. 10.5 engines. All eight engines will also be equipped with so-called EGRBP (Exhaust Gas Recirculation ByPass) technology to reduce emissions [ds_preview].

The exhaust gas after-treatment system was also developed by MAN Energy Solutions.

“We have developed this engine to fit most modern LNG tankers,” says Bjarne Foldager, Head of Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions, “And in fact, all ME-GA orders to date have been exclusively for this segment. Demand for the engine has remained high since its launch, primarily due to our in-house developed exhaust gas recirculation system, which has proven itself in operation for more than a decade and is being continuously optimized.”

MAN is delighted with its first order from Japan

Thomas S. Hansen, Head of Promotion and Customer Support, MAN Energy Solutions, adds: “Since May 2021, we have received more than 278 orders for ME-GA engines. Of these, seven ships with a total of 14 ME-GA engines onboard are already in operation. Although we have already received orders for ME-GA engines from Korea and China, this is the first order from this well-known Japanese shipping company, and we are grateful that NYK trusts our product. We have a strong and long-standing relationship with NYK and are delighted to now count them among our ME-GA customers.”
