More transparency: Ship registers introduce new system

The “Registry Information Sharing Compact” (RISC) database is designed to inform ship registries about the origin and potential problems of ships.

The program was launched jointly by reputable ship registries. The joint press conference in Washington D.C., sponsored by the US Department of State, was attended by several embassies representing various flags. The RISC database is a free online tool for ship registries to share and retrieve information about ships’ backgrounds.

RISC enables exchange between ship registers

It allows registers to share and research information on problematic vessels that may be circumventing regulations or engaging in suspicious activities. By sharing this data, flag registers can be better informed, eliminate risks and prevent so-called “flag hopping” when the owners of the vessels are under investigation.

“The RISC database represents a significant step forward in our collective efforts to safeguard the integrity and safety of global shipping,” said Alfonso Castillero in his opening speech. He is CEO of the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR), which comprises over 5,500 ships. “With this platform, we are strengthening our defences and working together to maintain the highest standards of compliance and security.”
