New Research Vessel for Indonesia: A joint effort by A&R and Fassmer

A new research vessel for Indonesia, jointly built by Abeking & Rasmussen and Fassmer, has been christened at the shipyard.

The new survey vessel, “Ocean Going,” is being built on behalf of the Indonesian Institute of Hydrography, “Bantu Hidro-Oseanografi.” It is 105 meters long, with a crew of 90 officers and sailors, and a maximum speed of 16 knots.

In December 2022, A&R was commissioned to build the new hydrographic vessel with construction number 6515, specifically developed to meet the complex requirements of the Indonesian Navy. Since the ship’s concept is based on a proven design from the neighboring Fassmer shipyard, the project has been a collaborative effort from the beginning, according to the long-established shipbuilding company.

From Indonesia to the Weser River

Following the steel cutting in September 2023, the official keel laying took place three months later at the Indonesian shipyard PT Palindo Marine in Batam City, which is supplying the pre-fitted hull. Final outfitting will take place later along the Weser River, with delivery scheduled for the end of 2025.

The two shipyards involved have yet to provide details on how and when the hull of the “Ocean Going” will arrive at the Weser.

With a beam of 17.4 meters and a draught of 4.5 meters, the vessel will use its modern equipment to carry out surveys, mapping, and underwater detection in support of naval forces. It is also equipped to strengthen SAR (Search and Rescue) capabilities in both Indonesian and international waters.
