Following the surprising termination of the lease agreement by the city of Stralsund, it is now clear that the Strela Shiprepair shipyard is ceasing operations.
As Managing Director Jan Tebbe-Simmendinger announced in a letter, all employment contracts have been terminated as part of the closure. Business operations will be permanently discontinued.
The shipyard has been in turmoil in recent weeks. At the end of March, it was announced that the city of Stralsund had unexpectedly terminated the lease agreement with Strela Shiprepair.
Strela Shiprepair had been based on the Volkswerft site since 2023. After the Norwegian shipbuilding company Fosen Shipyards terminated the contracts and filed for insolvency shortly afterwards, Strela not only took over the remaining work on the “Greif”, but also Fosen’s employees. In the following years, the repair company was able to significantly exceed the mark of 40 ships per year; the prospects for 2026 were also considered good.
However, the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, owner of the industrial park and the assembly hall, did not seem to think this was enough. The prospects for further cooperation were “not very promising”, explained Lord Mayor Alexander Bradow. Further details could not be published in order to avoid damage, it was said back in March.
It remains to be seen which company will use the space freed up by the termination of the contract in the future. According to reports, use by the armaments company Rheinmetall is possible.
