A new ro-ro freighter for Polynesia has been launched at the Dutch shipyard Royal Bodewes in Hoogezand on the Winschoterdiep.
The 87 m long and 15.8 meter wide RoRo freighter “Hawaikinui 2” was ordered by the Polynesian Navigation Company (SNP) and built at the Dutch shipyard under construction number 810.
After its planned delivery in spring 2025, the 12-kn vessel with a speed of 2,000 tdw will replace the operator’s 70.31-metre “Hawaikkinui”, which was built in 1980 and operates between Papeete and the islands of Huahine, Raiatea, Taha’a and Bora Bora.
The Bureau Veritas-classed “Hawaikinui 2” is designed to carry a variety of cargo, including containers, pallets, trucks, cars and construction equipment. Access to the main deck is via a stern ramp. A side-mounted crane is used to load the containers on the weather deck.
The 12 passengers have also been taken into consideration, as the ship’s accommodation has its own area consisting of a lounge, sanitary facilities and catering area.
Groot Ship Design is responsible for the design, while the French office Alwena Shipping is supervising the construction. The “Hawaikinui 2” is expected to be delivered in around three months. (CE)
