The United States Coast Guard has once again awarded the German company Rolls-Royce Power Systems a service contract for the propulsion systems of ten patrol vessels.
Rolls-Royce Power Systems has been awarded a contract by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) for the scheduled maintenance of the National Security Cutter fleet. The contract is for ten vessels equipped with mtu Series 1163 engines.
The new contract builds on the success of Rolls-Royce’s previous service contract with the USCG, which has covered the maintenance and repair of the fleet since the first vessel entered service in 2008.
Rolls-Royce will provide maintenance and repair services for the main propulsion diesel engines installed on each of the 124m National Security Cutters. The work will include both scheduled preventative maintenance and reactive repair support.
Rolls-Royce will provide all labor, materials, equipment and technical expertise required to carry out repairs and return the vessels to service. The contract also includes pre- and post-repair inspections, detailed condition reports and assistance with trials in port and at sea.
The work will be carried out by the Rolls-Royce service team in Alameda (California), Charleston (South Carolina), Honolulu (Hawaii) and other locations worldwide. In addition, Rolls-Royce has expanded its presence in Alameda, hired additional technicians and continues to invest in specialized tools to further enhance service quality.
The mtu Series 1163 engines that power the National Security Cutters have a 50-year proven track record in marine applications. They were first presented at the SMM in 1976. the series is available with an output of up to 7,400 kW and in 16- and 20-cylinder versions.
