Renk, a company specialising in military propulsion solutions, is expanding its capacity in the naval sector: David Brown Defence (DBD) is expanding the portfolio of the Augsburg-based gearbox manufacturer.
Renk and Stellex Capital Management have entered into a binding agreement for the acquisition of DBD, the companies announced today. DBD specialises in high-precision gearboxes for naval and land-based defence applications.
“With the acquisition of David Brown Defence, we are continuing our strategy of consolidating our leading position in the defence sector through targeted M&A activities,” said Alexander Sagel, CEO of the Renk Group. “David Brown Defence gives us access to the Five Eyes countries, strengthens our long-term access to key programmes for naval platforms and opens up opportunities in our aftermarket business. At the same time, we are expanding our existing product portfolio and technological expertise through the integration of propulsion systems for submarine applications. As a European partner, we are committed to the Huddersfield site and the UK defence industry for the long term, and we look forward to welcoming the David Brown Defence team into the Renk family.”
The takeover was also welcomed by the UK government. “The acquisition of David Brown Defence by the Renk Group is a strong commitment to the UK as an industrial base and a significant investment in a company whose propulsion and transmission technologies are key components of various naval and land-based systems used by the British armed forces,” said Rupert Pearce, the UK’s National Defence Director. “By combining David Brown Defence’s long-standing heritage and expertise with the Renk Group’s global presence and engineering expertise, this transaction will help to strengthen the resilience of supply chains, safeguard highly skilled jobs and ensure that the British Armed Forces have the capabilities they require.”
DBD has more than 100 years’ experience in the development and manufacture of transmission systems for naval and land-based defence applications. David Brown Defence employs around 530 people and is a key supplier to the most significant defence programmes of the British, Australian and Canadian navies.
Access to key naval programmes
According to Renk, the acquisition of David Brown Defence gives it access to major naval programmes in the coming years. These include, amongst others, the Global Combat Ship (GCS) programme comprising up to 34 vessels, including Type 26v frigates, Hunter-class frigates and River-class destroyers. The secured order book and pipeline, worth over £700 million, span the period from 2026 to 2030.
The acquisition is intended to secure Renk’s market leadership in the international naval gearbox market and, furthermore, to open up a long-term order base in the key naval programmes of the UK, Canada and Australia. Given the long life cycles of these programmes, the acquisition opens up sustainable growth opportunities in the aftermarket business. Overall, the acquisition represents a strategically important addition to the Renk Group’s existing portfolio in the marine sector.
David Brown Defence’s portfolio comprises three segments: in the Marine Surface segment, DBD is firmly integrated into the aforementioned surface vessel programmes as a certified supplier and brings with it a long track record as a manufacturer of main propulsion gearboxes for surface combatants. In the Marine Sub-Surface sector, the company brings technological expertise in low-noise and low-vibration propulsion systems for submarines, which were not previously part of the Renk Group’s portfolio and will play a significant role in the next generation of sub-surface platforms. In the land sector, British programme references, including the Challenger 2 and Boxer, complement Renk’s existing portfolio of armoured vehicles.
