SMM launches Energy Efficiency Hub

Like all other sectors of industry, the maritime sector also faces the challenge of reducing its emissions. One approach is to improve efficiency. For the first time, SMM is dedicating a separate exhibition area to this topic.

As part of the new Energy Efficiency Hub, exhibitors are showcasing market-ready approaches to more efficient ship operations. Under the theme ‘Efficiency First: Powering the Future of Shipping’, 24 companies from Europe, Asia and the Middle East are presenting their solutions.

According to Hamburg Messe, the Hub – which covers over 200 m² – is fully booked, demonstrating the industry’s keen interest.

To demonstrate the innovation potential already available today for greater energy efficiency, the Energy Efficiency Hub brings together companies from various technological sectors.

The hub consists of an international joint stand featuring 16 companies, as well as eight individual exhibitors. They are presenting a broad spectrum of solutions across the entire value chain – from digital optimisation and performance systems, through AI-supported applications and energy management, to hybrid and electrification solutions, wind assistance systems, solar technologies, on-board carbon capture and storage (OCCS), retrofit solutions, technologies for alternative fuels and future powertrain systems.

24 exhibitors, diverse approaches

Exhibitors include, amongst others, BAR Technologies, Cryospain, Neuman & Esser, Enogia, Glo Marine, Yada Green Energy Solutions and the European Research Institute for Gas and Energy Innovation (ERIG).

BAR Technologies is presenting the new WindWings Hub, a digital platform that enables shipping companies to monitor and analyse the performance of wind-assisted ship propulsion systems in real time. The application provides data-driven insights into voyage efficiency, fuel savings and maintenance requirements, thereby supporting more efficient operational management.

Cryospain is showcasing cryogenic process solutions and vacuum-insulated piping systems for LNG, liquid hydrogen, methanol and ammonia, thereby addressing various alternative fuel concepts for the shipping industry.

Neuman & Esser is presenting innovative compressor solutions for the use of alternative fuels in shipping. The portfolio includes, amongst other things, systems for LNG as marine fuel, LPG, liquid ammonia and LCO₂ cargo handling, as well as solutions for LNG carriers and FSU/FSRU applications.

The European Research Institute for Gas and Energy Innovation (ERIG) is presenting the EU-co-funded research project NavHyS. Together with 14 partners from eight European countries, the consortium is developing an innovative storage and propulsion system for liquid hydrogen (LH₂), which is to be used in future in service and support vessels for offshore wind farms. The project aims to make a significant contribution to the decarbonisation of shipping and the further development of hydrogen technologies.

Enogia is showcasing compact Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems for waste heat recovery. These convert waste heat from engines into electrical energy, thereby reducing the fuel consumption of on-board generators.

Glo Marine supports shipping companies and offshore firms with complex modernisation and retrofit projects aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions. The range of services extends from shore power and battery storage systems, through wind assistance and air lubrication, to electrical modernisation and the integration of new on-board systems.

Yada Green Energy Solutions presents integrated systems for ships using alternative fuels. Among other things, the company develops fuel supply systems for LNG, methanol, ammonia and hydrogen, as well as solutions for carbon capture, thereby supporting the transition to lower-emission propulsion concepts.

Roman Schroth, Solution Manager for LNG & Marine Business at Neuman & Esser, emphasises the importance of direct dialogue within the industry: “For us, SMM is a key platform for maintaining direct contact with shipping companies and other players in the maritime industry. Particularly in the face of constantly changing market conditions, these discussions are crucial for developing solutions that are not only efficient but also reliable and practical for on-board operation.”

As well as looking at the solutions available today, the focus is on the next steps in maritime transformation. On the Energy Efficiency Stage in Hall A4, international experts will discuss strategies for climate-friendly and energy-efficient shipping – including nuclear propulsion concepts.

Programme highlights include the Global Maritime Environmental Congress (GMEC), the Offshore Dialogue, and specialist events on retrofitting and upcycling, Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS), shore power, the IMO’s digitalisation strategy and Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS). Daily keynote presentations at the Energy Efficiency Hub complement the technical programme. There, experts will present the latest technologies and projects.
