Record summer for Scandlines

In 2023, 2.6 million passengers travelled to and from their vacation destination with Scandlines in June, July and August. In 2024, this figure rose to 2.7 million. The number of cars also increased – from 716,509 cars in 2023 to 727,978 in 2024. At the same time, Scandlines transported a large number of buses and trucks. In July alone, there were 3,003 buses.

“Already in early summer, we experienced a great deal of interest in ferry tickets for the summer vacation,” reports VP Head of Commercial Management Lars Kyrø. This was a clear signal that there would be a lot to do in the summer and it proved to be true. “We are pleased that we were able to send so many customers on vacation. We had stable operations and didn’t have to cancel any departures,” says Kyrø.

The largest number of passengers on the ferries was recorded on the weekend of 19-21 July with 146,209 passengers, while the weekend of 26-28 July saw the most cars, namely 40,235.

“We are seeing that summer vacationers are increasingly using the ferry around the clock when they return home from vacation,” reports Kyrø. “We would like to distribute the passengers so that there are no significant waiting times for anyone and everyone gets a really good experience.” Scandlines had, therefore, called on passengers to book crossings at less popular times. Many people followed suit.

Scandlines wants to use ferry capacities more effectively with a dynamic ticket system

Some passengers also used the dynamic ticket system, which offers lower prices for those who book early and take less full sailings. The system also contributes to a more effective use of ferry capacities and to a strengthening of Scandlines’ competitiveness.

With 39,000 departures on seven ferries, Scandlines transported almost 6.4 million passengers, over 1.6 million cars and over 700,000 freight units on the Puttgarden-Rødby and Rostock-Gedser routes in 2023.
