Over the past decade, TGE Marine has transformed from a specialist in gas carriers into a multi-gas, multi-application engineering partner. That evolution reflects not only the company’s own ambitions, but also the growing complexity of the maritime gas sector.
In this episode of HANSA.newscast, Janne Silden speaks with Jan Volkert Wibel, CEO of TGE Marine, about innovation, customer challenges and the engineering expertise required to support an increasingly diverse maritime gas sector. Recent projects such as the Northern Lights liquefied CO₂ carriers and Höegh’s first ammonia fuel gas systems provide practical examples of how the company has broadened its range of applications.
Drawing on his own experience as a marine engineer and later a service engineer, Jan Volkert also reflects on how his time at sea continues to shape his leadership. Understanding what it means when equipment fails in the middle of the ocean or during cargo operations is, he argues, essential experience for developing practical engineering solutions.
Looking ahead, the discussion turns to the growing complexity of the maritime industry. New gases, technologies and applications are developing in parallel, although infrastructure takes years to establish and vessels are expected to operate for decades. Rather than trying to predict a single direction, the conversation focuses on engineering solutions that can adapt to uncertainty.
As Jan Volkert puts it: “But what did not change the last 10 years is when it’s got difficult, when it’s innovations and if it’s challenging then we are there.”
