As fuel costs and decarbonisation targets continue to reshape maritime operations, lubrication is becoming an increasingly important factor in improving engine efficiency. Aurelia FE is a trunk piston engine oil developed to reduce fuel consumption and related emissions through an advanced lubricant formulation.
The maritime sector continues to face pressure from fuel costs, regulatory requirements and decarbonisation targets. According to Lubmarine, Aurelia FE has been developed to address these challenges by positioning lubrication as a contributor to fuel economy.
Lubmarine, the marine lubricants division of TotalEnergies Lubrifiants, supports shipowners and operators with technologies and services aimed at improving operational performance. Drawing on its experience in trunk piston engine oils, the company combines product development with technical support.
Aurelia FE was developed at the TotalEnergies Centre for Research Solaize (CReS) following an extended research and development programme. Its formulation is designed to optimise friction characteristics and engine cleanliness. Under standardised MARPOL E3 engine cycle test conditions, the lubricant achieved weighted average fuel savings of 1.5%. According to Lubmarine, field measurements indicate higher savings depending on engine design and operating profile. The measurement methodology has been validated by Bureau Veritas.
From an operational perspective, Aurelia FE is designed as a drop-in solution requiring no ship modifications or off-hire periods. The company states that the formulation provides high detergency, strong lubrication performance and slower ageing than conventional trunk piston engine oils, supporting consistent engine efficiency.
Aurelia FE will be presented at SMM 2026, where Lubmarine will also hold daily presentations on the new lubricant.
