KTR Brake Systems unveils integrated SBT shaft system

The SBT system from KTR Brake Systems combines the functions “stop”, “block” and “turn” for propeller shafts in a single unit. Depending on operational requirements, the functions can be used individually or combined in double or triple configurations. According to the company, the system supports typical operating and maintenance scenarios requiring controlled shaft stopping, secure locking or shaft turning.

The SBT system consists of one or more disc brakes, locking elements and turning devices. It is designed for propulsion systems with outputs ranging from 500 to 25,000 kW per propeller shaft. Depending on the propulsion concept, each function is available in electric, hydraulic or manual versions. For electric propulsion systems, KTR also offers an all-electric version designed, among other things, for low-noise operation.

To facilitate integration into a vessel’s control architecture, all versions are equipped with an electrical control system that enables both local operation in the engine room and control and monitoring from the bridge. The configuration of each SBT system is tailored to customer and classification society requirements.

The system is suitable for propeller shafts on a wide range of vessel types, from smaller craft to large ships. According to KTR Brake Systems, operational safety, user-friendliness and low maintenance requirements are key considerations in the design of the system.
