Iberdrola relies again on the port of Mukran

Iberdrola is building its third wind farm in the Baltic Sea with the “Windanker” offshore project. The port of Mukran is once again taking on a key role as the base and later operating port in the region’s largest offshore wind cluster.

The offshore company Iberdrola is building “Windanker”, its third wind farm in the Baltic Sea. The port of Mukran is playing a central role in the implementation of the project.

Iberdrola and the port of Mukran have been working together for several years. Back in 2014, the port on Rügen served as the basis for the construction of the “Wikinger” wind farm. The cooperation will be further expanded with the new “Windanker” project. Mukran Port will serve as a base port for the handling and assembly of towers, nacelles and rotor blades. Once completed, it will also serve as an operating port to ensure the supply of the wind farm for decades to come.

With “Windanker”, “Wikinger” (350 MW) and “Baltic Eagle” (476 MW), Iberdrola is investing around €3.5 billion in the Baltic Hub. Together, the three wind farms form the largest offshore wind cluster in the German Baltic Sea and ensure annual electricity production for more than 1.1 million households.

“With ‘Windanker’, we are realizing our third project in the Baltic Hub – and continuing a trusting collaboration with Mukran Port that has lasted over ten years. This partnership is a cornerstone of our offshore activities in the Baltic Sea: from construction to decades of operation. Together we are creating added value in the region and making a decisive contribution to a secure, climate-neutral energy supply,” explains Felipe Montero, CEO of Iberdrola Germany.

Henry Forster, Managing Director of Mukran Port, emphasizes: “The Mukran installation port impresses with its modern and efficient infrastructure. Our role in the new wind turbine class of the Windanker offshore wind farm proves this once again. We are very closely involved with the offshore industry in the planning process.”
