The Finnish shipping company Godby has ordered two new RoRo ferries in China. The design for the newbuildings is being supplied by the Hamburg-based company Technolog Services.
The two vessels are Stream RoRo 1700 units and will be built at CIMC Raffles. An option for two additional RoRo vessels has been agreed.
The ships will be 125 m long and 24 m wide, offering a trailer capacity of 1,700 lane metres. Deadweight will be approximately 6,200 tonnes.
The Stream RoRo vessels will be equipped with a stern ramp and fixed internal ramps connecting the three cargo decks. Typical cargo will include trailers, cars, other RoRo cargo and forest products. Containers, reefer containers and various types of dangerous goods can also be carried. The ships will have a high Finnish-Swedish ice class 1A.
Design made in Hamburg
The Stream RoRo concept was developed in cooperation with Technolog Services in Hamburg. Particular focus was placed on minimising fuel consumption, achieved through extensive CFD simulations and model tests in a towing tank.
Loading capacity will be 70–100% higher than that of Godby’s existing vessels Mimer and Midas, while maintaining the same fuel consumption. The Stream RoRos will be equipped with shore power connections and batteries enabling emission-free port operations and short sea passages. Battery capacity can be expanded at a later stage and complemented by additional emission-free energy solutions. The newbuildings are also prepared for a waste heat recovery system and alternative fuels such as methanol.
Construction is scheduled to begin in June and November 2027, with launching planned for May and October 2028. Delivery is expected in September 2028 and January 2029.
