The state-controlled Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri, together with its joint venture partner Leonardo, has secured an extensive order from the defense industry. A separate business division is to be promoted.
The joint venture Orizzonte Sistemi Navali has signed a new contract for the so-called “Through Life Sustainment Management” (TLSM 2) with the state defense agency Occar, as has now been announced.
This contract covers long-term service of the FREMM-class frigates supplied to the Italian Navy and is to be understood as a “continuation of a well-established strategic cooperation between Italy’s main defense players”.
The five-and-a-half year TLSM2 contract is worth around €764 million, including options worth around €335 million. It includes maintenance and logistical support for all systems and equipment of the FREMM units.
Fincantieri is investing in strengthening its after-sales service
Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero said: “After-sales service has become as strategically important as shipbuilding itself. It is a key factor in ensuring the long-term operational continuity and efficiency of naval vessels. A strong synergy has developed between the Italian Navy and Fincantieri in this area”. Fincantieri is investing decisively in strengthening its after-sales service offer, creating “a dedicated business area that the company is increasingly promoting at an international level.”
Subcontracts worth approximately €265 million and €190 million are currently being signed with Fincantieri and Leonardo. Further contributions will come from important partners such as MBDA, Elettronica, TMDS and several small and medium-sized companies from the Italian marine and electronics sectors.
“This new phase of support introduces a more integrated and innovative model of collaboration between industry and the Italian Navy,” the partners explained. A key feature of TLSM2 is the direct involvement of industry personnel in naval processes, facilities and digital systems, with a focus on preventive maintenance, material management and optimized fleet readiness.
The use of digital platforms for service execution and reporting, combined with technical support and scheduled maintenance during planned downtime, is designed to ensure maximum fleet availability while minimizing operational disruptions.
