Four naval training vessels: Fassmer opts for Stralsund

Fassmer will in future be building the hulls for four German Navy training vessels in Stralsund. Construction is set to begin in autumn 2026. Through this project, the company is strengthening its new shipyard site and creating additional jobs

The Fassmer shipyard will build the four hulls for the SAMSe (mod) training vessels for the German Navy at its new site in Stralsund. With this decision, the company aims to strengthen the shipbuilding site it acquired at the start of the year and utilise its production capacity for one of its current new-build projects.

The hulls of all four vessels, including a significant proportion of the shipbuilding equipment, will be constructed in Stralsund. The boats will then each be transferred under their own power to Motzen, where final outfitting, commissioning and delivery will take place.

Construction of the first hull will begin as early as autumn 2026. The fourth and final hull will leave the production hall in Stralsund in early 2029.

According to Fassmer, the decision in favour of this location was a deliberate choice based on the existing infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities. The generous hall and construction site capacities would allow for the four vessels to be built partly in parallel, thereby ensuring efficient processes throughout the entire production phase. At the same time, the production will boost capacity utilisation at the Stralsund site and underline the Fassmer Group’s commitment to shipbuilding in Germany.

“By building the four hulls in Stralsund, we are making targeted use of our new site’s strengths for a challenging naval project,” said Jan Oskar Henkel, Managing Director at Fassmer. “The existing infrastructure and on-site capacity provide ideal conditions for the cost-effective and efficient implementation of this series of vessels.”

The project will further increase capacity utilisation at the Stralsund site. Fassmer has already recruited additional staff there in recent months; further new hires are already planned.

The four training vessels are being built as part of the “Sea-based Training and Sea Trials (modified)” (SAMSe (mod)) project for the German Navy. Fassmer was awarded the contract by the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) in February 2026. Delivery of the first vessel is scheduled for the end of 2028.
