Engine manufacturer Everllence plans to develop a new type of large-capacity LNG tanker in collaboration with the Chinese state-owned shipbuilding group Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding.
Everllence, the engine manufacturer formerly known as MAN Energy Solutions, and the Shanghai-based group have signed a development agreement – a so-called Engineering Design Agreement (EDA). The agreement covers the development of a 180,000-cubic-metre-class LNG carrier fitted with Everllence’s DFE+ (Dual-Fuel Electric+) propulsion system.
The partners aim to “contribute to more environmentally friendly and efficient LNG transport”, according to a statement. This is particularly relevant in light of the IMO’s further tightened CII emissions requirements. Hudong-Zhonghua and Everllence had previously collaborated on the delivery of ten conventional DFDE (Dual-Fuel Diesel Electric) LNG carriers.
Song Wei, Chief Technical Engineer at Hudong-Zhonghua, said at the signing ceremony: “Decarbonisation is a clear trend in the shipping industry. At the same time, shipowners face unprecedented challenges and uncertainties if they are to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. We are therefore delighted to be working with Everllence to develop a highly efficient hybrid-electric propulsion solution for LNG carriers. This is intended to open up additional options for shipowners.”
Dominik Thoma, Global Manager for LNG Cargo at Everllence, added: “Individual technology providers can now only achieve limited gains in efficiency. To make greater progress, shipyards and engine manufacturers must therefore work closely together. Hudong-Zhonghua, as the market leader in the construction of LNG carriers, and Everllence, as the market leader in the development and manufacture of four-stroke engines, together possess the capabilities to significantly drive forward the further development of propulsion systems.”
