Everllence presented its new ammonia engine at the end of last year. The manufacturer has now reported the successful factory acceptance test.
The engine was built under license at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI-EMD) Engine & Machinery in South Korea. After passing the factory acceptance test (FAT), the B&W 6G60ME-LGIA dual-fuel engine (Liquid Gas Injection Ammonia) will be delivered to the customer. The customer is the Singapore-based shipping company Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS), which is currently having a ship built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in South Korea. The engine is also equipped with HPSCR (High Pressure Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology.
First VLACs with ammonia engines
According to Everllence, the VLACs (Very Large Ammonia Carriers) currently under construction at HHI are the first in the world to be equipped with 6G60ME-LGIA ammonia engines. The delivery of the engine is scheduled for October 2026.
For Ole Pyndt Hansen, Senior Vice President, Head of Two-Stroke R&D at Everllence, the successful factory acceptance is “a real milestone”. This is because the ammonia engine is now close to its market launch.
Engine runs stably
The ME-LGIA was first presented at a two-day Everllence event in Copenhagen in November 2025. Thanks to the diesel principle and the dual-fuel concept with LPG injection, the engine has many of the advantages of the existing ME-LGIM and ME-LGIP engines, which run on methanol and LPG respectively, according to Everllence.
The engine also has numerous additional safety features such as containment systems, sensors, system ventilation and double-walled piping specifically designed for the fuel properties of ammonia.
According to Christian Ludwig, Vice President, Head of Global Sales & Promotion, Two-Stroke Business at Everllence, the ME-LGIA has passed the FAT in all operating modes. This latest success is the result of an intensive three-year test program in which safety was always a priority. “Based on the findings from other pilot projects we are currently working on, we are confident that we will set the industry standard for ammonia engines,” says Ludwig.
According to Everllence, the ME-LGIA will initially be offered in the bore sizes G50, S50, S60, G60, G70 and G80. Retrofit solutions will then also be available as part of the full market launch.
