New customer for EWD shipyard: Hamburg shipping company Ernst Russ sends “Samskip Express” to Emden for extensive docking work.
The Hamburg shipping company Ernst Russ is a new customer of Emder Werft und Dock (EWD). The container freighter “Samskip Express” was extensively overhauled. The ship was also given a new silicone-based underwater coating.
The coating ensures that the ship glides smoothly through the water, thereby saving fuel. In order to apply the new paint, the old paint was first removed from the underwater hull using a maximum water pressure of 3,000 bar.
EWD overhauls propeller
As part of the class renewal, the shipyard team removed the ship’s propeller shaft for an inspection and overhaul. The propeller blades were also checked and overhauled. A seal on the rudder of the 141-metre-long ship was replaced.
“We overhauled numerous components that are crucial to the manoeuvrability of the ship and initially dismantled them for this purpose. In addition to the rudder, this also included a stern thruster,” reports project manager Rainer Schröder.
EWD Managing Director Björn Sommer is delighted to have gained a new customer in Ernst Russ and the shipping company Köpping from Rendsburg, which is responsible for the ship’s technical management. “Our team is able to carry out almost all complex maintenance and repair work on ships of any type.”
The shipyard also carried out further steel work on the ship, tank cleaning, the overhaul of the holding tank and the repair of the container guides in the hold.
