Renk, the Augsburg-based propulsion specialist, is rebranding David Brown Defence as Renk UK Huddersfield and, with the now-completed takeover, is establishing a new centre of excellence for submarine propulsion systems in the UK.
Renk and the financial investor Stellex Capital Management have now obtained all the necessary regulatory approvals for the takeover announced in July, as the Bavarian company has now confirmed. The purchase price has not been disclosed. The parties have agreed to maintain confidentiality regarding the terms of the agreement.
David Brown Defence (DBD) is therefore now part of the Renk Group and operates under the name Renk UK Huddersfield. According to a statement, the Huddersfield site will now serve as a centre of excellence for submarine propulsion systems.
DBD complements the Augsburg-based company’s existing portfolio in three areas. These include main propulsion systems for naval vessels, as well as low-noise and low-vibration propulsion technologies for submarines, which are being incorporated into the Renk portfolio for the first time. In addition, there are drive units and transmissions for wheeled and tracked vehicles.
“With the completion of this acquisition, we are taking on responsibility for critical defence programmes and the customers behind them. As a European partner, we are committed to the Huddersfield site and to the British defence industry. Together, we will strengthen our ability to supply the armed forces with the reliable propulsion solutions they require,” said CEO Alexander Sagel.
Renk hopes that the transaction will provide access to long-term naval programmes in the UK, Canada, Norway and Australia. At the same time, it is expanding its presence in the ‘Five Eyes’ countries. Specifically, it aims to support the implementation of the Global Combat Ship (Type 26). “The Global Combat Ship plays a strategically important role and therefore offers long-term potential in both the programme and aftermarket sectors,” the statement continued.
David Brown Defence’s “extensive order book and well-filled pipeline”, with a total volume of over GBP 700 million for the period from 2026 to 2030, is said to underline the company’s significant role in these programmes. Furthermore, operational and technological synergies would arise from the shared use of manufacturing capacity, as well as from collaboration in the areas of procurement, development and market access.
“Our team of 530 employees brings together over 100 years of engineering expertise. As part of the Renk Group, we can build on this tradition whilst benefiting from an international network and a shared commitment to delivering quality and reliability to our customers. We look forward to shaping this new chapter together,” said Mike Helme, CEO of David Brown Defence.
