With PowerAlign, Cavotec has introduced a shore power solution specifically designed for container terminals.
The compact system can be seamlessly integrated into existing quay infrastructure and expanded with modular components to meet local requirements.
At TOC Europe 2025, Cavotec announced the market launch of PowerAlign. The provider of electrification and automation solutions for ports and industrial applications emphasized that the system was developed in close collaboration with industry stakeholders.
PowerAlign enhances terminal flexibility, offering a reach of up to 140 meters with a single unit, and can be further extended. The rails are mounted directly on the quay wall or deck, while the connections comply with IEC 80005-1 standards and support up to 16 kA/s.
“PowerAlign is the result of our close collaboration with port operators, shipowners and terminal equipment manufacturers,” says David Pagels, CEO of Cavotec. “It offers container ports, which are increasingly under pressure to reduce emissions without compromising on performance, a flexible, compact and future-proof shore power solution.”
Unlike fixed installations, which can restrict crane and cargo handling operations, PowerAlign’s flat socket box and compact footprint of less than 3.5 m² keeps quaysides clear, the company said. The system’s closed cable drum, which is mounted on the quay edge, ensures a longer cable service life and minimal maintenance – a major advantage in terminals with limited space and high traffic volumes.
Shore power is becoming an important pillar of the infrastructure in more and more ports. For example, Cavotec recently installed a system for a cruise terminal in Antwerp-Zeebrugge. In Hamburg, meanwhile, the shipping company ONE will in future be using shore power at the CTB and CTA terminals, as was announced a few days ago.
