Hamburg-based shipping company Carsten Rehder is planning to expand its order book for MPP ships from India to 12 newbuildings.
The Indian shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and Carsten Rehder have now signed a letter of intent to this effect in Oslo. The Hamburg-based company had already ordered eight newbuildings of the Coral 7500 type from GRSE in two tranches last year. The next step has now been announced during the Nor-Shipping trade fair in Norway.
In addition to the original specifications, these vessels will have hybrid propulsion and meet the latest cyber security standards. The order is expected to be finalized on August 31, it said.
The vessels will be 120 meters long and 17 meters wide with a maximum draught of 6.75 meters. They will each have a single cargo hold in which bulk cargo, general cargo and project cargo can be accommodated. It will also be possible to transport containers on the hatch covers. However, the newbuildings were designed specifically for the transportation of several large wind turbine blades on deck. Following a number of sales as a result of the major shipping crisis, Carsten Rehder converted his own fleet and also purchased ships.
In view of the shortage of shipyard space, large tonnage requirements and adequate quality, several shipowners recently ordered MPP ships in India, including Navi Merchant, AtoB@C and the German shipping company HS Schiffahrt from Haren an der Ems. Yorck Niclas Prehm, analyst at Hamburg-based broker Toepfer Transport, recently made it clear in the HANSA Podcast that there is a great need for new MPP vessels in the global fleet, and the conversation also focused on shipbuilding developments in India.
The Indians also announced a further expansion step in Oslo and initiated their entry into the construction of offshore platforms and vessels. To this end, a letter of intent was signed with M/S Aries Marine, a Dubai-based engineering and construction company, for the construction of offshore platforms and vessels. “This is intended to expand GRSE’s global reach in the offshore market,” says GRSE.
