The ports of Bremen can look back on a successful 2024. The handling of containers and bulk goods increased significantly.
However, there were losses in vehicle handling, and fewer ships called at the ports. 4.4 million TEU were handled in Bremen and Bremerhaven last year – an increase of 6.3% compared to 2023. Around 343,000 TEU were handled last December, with October being the month with the highest throughput at 400,000 TEU.
Coal handling in Bremen’s ports decreases significantly
The total throughput of the ports of Bremen is 62 million tons, of which 54 million tons are general cargo and 8 million tons are bulk cargo. A significant increase was also achieved here: Compared to the previous year, growth amounted to 5.9%, with bulk cargo falling by 7.2%, while the larger general cargo segment grew by 8.3%. Coal handling fell significantly with a loss of 71.8% (from 298,000 to 84,000 tons). At around 402,000 tons, approximately 32% less grain was handled than in the previous year.
The handling of vehicles, an important segment for Bremerhaven in particular, recorded a drop of 15.2%. A total of 1.52 million cars were handled, compared to around 1.78 million in the previous year.
