2026 has been a significant year for AYK Energy. The company recently secured one of its largest battery contracts to date, supplying battery systems for nine new RoPax vessels being built for Grimaldi. It has also been selected to provide a 6.78 MWh battery system for CSL’s bulk carrier MV Yampu and a 16 MWh battery system for the polar research vessel Polarstern. According to the company, several additional large contracts will be announced in the near future.
At SMM 2026, AYK Energy will also introduce new products intended to expand its battery portfolio and increase the range of solutions available for different vessel applications.
According to founder Chris Kruger, demand for marine battery systems continues to grow as shipowners seek lower operating costs, improved safety and reduced emissions. He also highlights operational advantages, including the ability to switch instantly to electric power for improved manoeuvrability compared with conventional propulsion systems.
“AYK is proving that battery technology is evolving and becoming more powerful, more advanced, safer and more competitive. At a time of volatile oil prices battery power is offering an increasingly attractive option to vessel operators. Whether it is a hybrid or fully electric vessel, battery power has a very big future, with battery systems paying for themselves within just a few years,” says Kruger.
AYK Energy was founded in 2018 by Chris Kruger to develop marine battery systems combining performance, safety and cost efficiency. The company draws on more than 15 years of experience in the marine battery sector and was involved in the development of one of the first type-approved marine battery systems.
