With the “Biomar”, the shipping company AtoB@C is taking delivery of the seventh newbuild in a 12-ship series from an Indian shipyard. The last ship in the order is already under construction.
The 5,400-dwt ship has now been delivered to the shipping company, which belongs to the Finnish ESL Group. This brings the number of plug-in hybrid newbuilds in the fleet to seven vessels. “The delivery marks another important milestone on the company’s journey towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient fleet,” ESL announced.
AtoB@C Shipping had ordered twelve plug-in hybrid ships from the Chowgule & Company shipyard in India. One ship will be delivered every quarter until fall 2026.
“With each new ship, we are building a greener future for short sea shipping in Europe,” said Frida Rowland, Commercial Director. Like her sister ships, the “Biomar” has a hybrid drive and a shore power connection.
In connection with the delivery of the “Biomar”, it was also announced that the series is slowly coming to an end. Construction of the last ship in the twelve-ship series, the “Luxomar”, has already begun with the first steel cut. The eighth ship, “Ventumar”, was launched on May 30 and is currently being equipped for delivery in the third quarter of 2025.
The shipping company currently operates a fleet of 35 ships between 3,000 and 6,000 dwt; together with ESL, it has 51 freighters between 3,000 and 56,000 dwt.
