The South Korean shipping company Hyundai Glovis has put the PCTC newbuild “Glovis Leader” into service. The ship can transport up to 10,800 vehicles.
Hyundai Glovis is entering a new size class in global vehicle transportation. The South Korean logistics group has put the “Glovis Leader” into service. The Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) has space for up to 10,800 vehicles.
The ship is 230 m long and 40 m wide. The gross tonnage is given as 102,590 GT. According to Hyundai Glovis, the total loading area is equivalent to around 28 soccer pitches. This means that the new building significantly exceeds the previous large PCTC units and marks a further step in the expansion of vehicle shipping for the company.
LNG dual-fuel propulsion and shore power
The “Glovis Leader” is also technically designed to meet stricter environmental requirements. The car carrier has an LNG dual-fuel drive and a shore power system. While the ship is in port, it can use electricity from the shore instead of generating energy using its own on-board generators. Among other things, Hyundai Glovis refers to stricter international environmental regulations and the EU emissions trading scheme.
The “Glovis Leader” is to be used on the Group’s global routes. Hyundai Glovis is pursuing a clear growth target: the PCTC fleet is set to grow to 128 ships by 2030. The company then aims to transport 5 million vehicles a year. According to the company, this would correspond to more than 20% of global vehicle shipments.
This is not just about vehicles from the Hyundai Group. Hyundai Glovis wants to further expand its third-party business and conclude additional transportation contracts with car manufacturers in Europe, North America and China. Last year, 53% of sales in the vehicle transportation business were already attributable to non-Group cargo.
“We will continue to strengthen our competitiveness in vehicle shipping and provide stable supply chain services for global customers,” said a company representative.
