Vard delivers hybrid fishing trawler “Havbryn”

The Norwegian shipyard Vard, part of the Fincantieri Group, has christened and delivered the fishing trawler “Havbryn”.

The 80.4-metre-long vessel is based on the Vard 8-02 design and replaces the previous “Havbryn” built in Turkey in 2013. The vessel was developed for semi-pelagic trawl fishing and bottom trawling and, according to the specifications, combines efficient fishing, high product quality and a reduced environmental footprint.

The “Havbryn” features an ice-strengthened hull, a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system, Vard Electro’s SeaQ Energy Storage System and an H/G processing plant. Hold spaces for chilled and frozen products, as well as silo tanks for the further processing of biomass onshore, are designed to ensure the catch is utilised as fully as possible.

According to Vard, the crew were a top priority during the development process. Consequently, the vessel features modern interiors, architect-designed communal areas, a lounge and mess room, a gym and comfortable cabins designed for demanding operations at sea. The entire interior fit-out was supplied by Vard Interiors.

Seaonics has supplied a winch and crane package that has been specially developed for safe and efficient deck operations under demanding conditions. When deploying and retrieving the towed cable, the winches feed energy back into the SeaQ Energy Storage System, thereby contributing to lower energy consumption during operation, according to the shipyard.

The hull was built at Vard Shipyards Romania – Braila, before final outfitting, completion, testing and on-time delivery took place at Vard Brattvaag in Norway.
