Rolls-Royce unveils new mtu variable-speed generator sets

At SMM 2026, Rolls-Royce Power Systems will present technologies for lower-emission and more efficient shipping. The focus will be on propulsion systems, sustainable fuels, automation and service solutions.

A highlight will be the new standardised mtu Series 2000 variable-speed generator sets for workboats. According to the company, the units offer high power density and can reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 15%. Variable-speed operation adapts to different load profiles, making the generator sets suitable for electric and hybrid vessels. Rolls-Royce Power Systems also states that noise and vibration levels are reduced by around 6 dB. The range is complemented by a new SCR exhaust aftertreatment system meeting IMO Tier III requirements.

The mtu power units are designed for ship electrification and can also be used on fully electric or battery-powered vessels as emergency power supplies or range extenders. The portfolio includes 8V to 16V units for applications such as passenger ferries, SAR vessels, offshore support vessels, yachts and patrol boats.

In automation, Rolls-Royce Power Systems will present mtu NautIQ together with data analytics and modular solutions designed to support fleet management for both newbuild and retrofit projects.

The company’s service portfolio includes extended maintenance intervals, in-situ maintenance and warranty programmes covering the entire vessel lifecycle.

“As a company within the Rolls-Royce Group, we actively evaluate, research and invest in future technologies to offer our customers the right propulsion technology for their fleets – both today and in the future – and support them with the expertise of our engineers and our service team throughout the entire service life of their vessels,” says Lukas Köhler, Senior Vice President Global Marine & Mining at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
