The Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. (MOL) acquires a stake in the Hamburg-based company Deutsche Offshore Schifffahrt (DO). MOL is also acquiring shares in the C-CSOV (Construction Commissioning Service Operation Vessel) currently under construction.

These CSOVs are to be placed on the international offshore energy market in future. Deutsche Offshore will then be the operator of the specialized vessels. MOL and DO now want to combine their respective expertise to establish a “strong platform” for the offshore energy market. The joint strategy also includes developing further independent projects with this platform, it is said.

As part of the investment, DO will enable MOL to utilize the know-how of the offshore specialist founded two years ago. This concerns both the integrative capabilities of Deutsche Offshore Schifffahrt as the developer of the innovative C-CSOV and the expertise for the subsequent operation of these special ships.

Four ships already ordered

Four C-CSOVs have been ordered by Schoeller Holdings, the joint venture partner of Deutsche Offshore Schifffahrt. The C-CSOVs are characterized by maximum flexibility in operation. They extend the purpose of the conventional CSOV vessel type and thus open up new perspectives for more efficient construction and operation of offshore energy infrastructure. Columbia Shipmanagement, which like the heavy lift shipping company “AAL” belongs to Schoeller Holdings, will provide the technical management.

According to DO, the global energy market is characterized by a high demand for support vessels. Europe has taken a leading role in this market and requires a large number of technically sophisticated vessels to support offshore construction projects that have already been agreed.

Attractive offshore markets are also emerging in the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, globally established operators of offshore energy production facilities have recognized the need for innovative vessels for the commissioning and decommissioning as well as maintenance and repair of the facilities.
