AFT OPT: Revolutionizing Ship Efficiency

LR Shipdesign will present its new »AFT OPT« technology at SMM 2024. This innovation originates from an analogy of principles used in the design of aircraft and is applied to ship hulls. This application of physics in connection with hydrodynamical and hydromechanical principles leads to a new design approach for the aft hull bottom area with a proprietary CFD software tool.

Results: Hull shape and lower hull resistance lead to a much better filled propeller disk, improved wake flow, and rudder characteristics. The power demand for the main engine (PD) is reduced by more than 6 to 8 %.

Ships are only sustainable future assets when combining all the latest requirements of shipbuilders and operators. Ship owners should not hesitate to use their purchasing power to integrate more economical shipbuilding know-how with their own operational requirements. The cost for new merchant vessels is relatively low compared with the OPEX over the course of a ship’s lifetime. AFT OPT helps ship owners and fuel payers stay ahead of market participants.

AFT OPT technology reduces the main engine power demand for the same cargo load, speed, and draft by at least 6 % compared to so-called »latest optimised design«, which is based on traditional or proprietary design technologies. Analysis of all ship model basin test results shows that full-scale results for real vessels will be better than in model scale. Statements of Fact (by class, flag state), etc., and patents for AFT OPT hull lines were issued worldwide, including PR China, S-Korea, Japan, EU, etc., for the first time ever due to the unique and tremendous improvement in ship efficiency!
