Wärtsilä invests €90m to expand engine production

Finnish technology group Wärtsilä is once again investing heavily in production capacity in Vaasa, aiming in part to increase engine deliveries to the maritime industry.

The company plans to invest around €90 million in its Sustainable Technology Hub (STH), further expanding technical production capacity in Vaasa and across the associated global supply chain by 30%.

“This investment will enable Wärtsilä to deliver higher volumes of engines, serve the growing demand in the energy and marine sectors, and better support customer needs and long-term business growth,” the company said.

The move marks Wärtsilä’s second major capacity expansion announcement this year. In February, the company unveiled plans to increase technical production capacity by 35%. Combined with the new investment, total planned capacity growth will reach 65% compared with 2025 levels.

The first expansion phase is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2028, with the additional 30% increase expected by the first quarter of 2029.

“Demand in both the energy and marine markets continues to develop positively,” said Wärtsilä President and CEO Håkan Agnevall.

“In the energy sector, this is driven by rising power consumption and the rapid growth of data centres, while in the marine sector, demand is being supported by decarbonisation regulations and the need for greater fuel efficiency and fuel flexibility.”

Opened in 2022, Wärtsilä’s Sustainable Technology Hub in Vaasa spans 90,000 square metres and employs more than 3,800 people. The facility serves as a centre for collaboration, innovation and partnerships, bringing together Wärtsilä specialists, customers, technology partners and academic institutions.

All engine types in Wärtsilä’s portfolio are manufactured at the site, which also houses a training centre and one of the company’s remote monitoring centres.

Including the latest expansion, Wärtsilä’s total investment in the Vaasa hub will exceed €490 million.
