The Port of Gdańsk is continuing its growth trajectory in terms of cargo handling. In the first nine months of 2026, 65.2 million tonnes of cargo were handled, compared with 59.1 million tonnes in the same period last year. This represents an increase of 6.1 million tonnes, or 10.3%.
According to the figures, general cargo, in particular containerised cargo, made the largest contribution to this growth and remains one of the port’s key growth drivers.
The largest cargo group at the Port of Gdańsk is liquid fuels, which account for around 45% of total cargo handling. From January to September 2026, 29.4 million tonnes were handled. According to the port authority, this figure was at a similar level to the previous year.
The second-largest cargo category is general cargo, accounting for more than 36%. Coal ranks third, accounting for around 10% of throughput.
Port of Gdańsk benefits from general cargo
The general cargo category recorded the largest absolute growth in throughput. In the first nine months of 2026, 23.5 million tonnes were handled. This was 3.6 million tonnes more than in the previous year, according to the Port of Gdańsk. This corresponds to an increase of 18 per cent. Containerised cargo was of particular significance here, with a handling volume reaching 21.1 million tonnes. As the port reports, this was 17.6% more than in the corresponding period of 2025. Measured in terms of TEU, this represents growth of 21%, from just over 2 million to just under 2.5 million TEU.
Significant increases were also recorded in coal handling. According to the port operators, this trend can also be observed in some of the largest ports in the European Union. From January to September, 6.7 million tonnes of coal were handled, around 1.8 million tonnes more than a year earlier. In percentage terms, this corresponds to an increase of 36%.
Growth was also recorded in grain handling. Handling totalled 2.1 million tonnes, which was 33% higher than the figure for the first three quarters of 2025. The grain terminals handled more than half a million tonnes of grain more than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Growth was recorded in almost all major cargo categories at the Port of Gdańsk. The only segment to show a slight decline after the first three quarters of 2026 was the ‘other bulk cargoes’ category. Handling in this segment totalled 2.8 million tonnes, which was 1.5% below the figure for the corresponding period last year.
According to the Port of Gdańsk, the results for the period from January to September 2026 show that there remains significant growth potential, particularly in the containerised general cargo segment, which has been one of the key factors in strengthening the port’s position for years.
