NYK takes over British e-commerce logistics company

Like other shipping companies, the Japanese NYK Group is expanding its logistics business and acquiring a UK-based delivery platform for e-commerce operators.

In February, the International Logistics Group (ILG), a British subsidiary of NYK’s logistics subsidiary Yusen Logistics, acquired Noel Topco Limited, a UK-based holding company with ten companies, including Global Freight Solutions (GFS). The acquisition is part of the growth strategy for the logistics business outlined in the medium-term management plan announced by the Japanese group in March 2023. [ds_preview]

ILG specialises in fulfilment services for e-commerce companies, from receipt of orders to delivery. The UK e-commerce market is enjoying strong demand and is the third largest in the world after China and the US.

GFS, the operating company of Noel Topco, provides platform services to manage and coordinate end consumers, e-commerce retailers, fulfilment centres and carriers for the delivery and return of products, offering a wide range of delivery territories, dates and rates to meet increasingly diverse and demanding customer requirements.

“The acquisition aims to add a new platform service to NYK Group’s logistics business, expanding its services and differentiating NYK Group from its competitors. NYK Group aims to further expand its business by laying a solid foundation in the e-commerce market and promising continuous expansion,” the shipping company said in a statement.

However, the Group is not expanding its logistics business in all areas. The air freight subsidiary NCA, for example, was sold last year.
