Hapag-Lloyd expands presence in West Africa

Hapag-Lloyd is opening a new office in Cotonou on May 20. The liner shipping company intends to strengthen its presence in West Africa and move closer to customers and partners in Benin.

Hapag-Lloyd is expanding its regional network in West Africa. On May 20, the Hamburg-based liner shipping company will open a new office in Cotonou, Benin. From there, the long-established company intends to serve local customers more directly and focus its services more strongly on the regional market.

Benin is an important market for Hapag-Lloyd in West Africa. The port of Cotonou acts as an access point for Benin and the hinterland, including the domestic markets of Niger and Burkina Faso. According to the company, Cotonou also plays a central role in connecting Hapag-Lloyd services to and from West Africa.

“The opening of our new office in Benin is an important step in further expanding our presence in West Africa,” explains Jesper Kanstrup, Managing Director Sub-Region Africa at Hapag-Lloyd. “Benin is an important market for us in West Africa and fits very well with our growth targets under Strategy 2030. With the new office, we are closer to our customers and partners and can further improve the quality of our services in the region.”

According to Hapag-Lloyd, the company operates a fleet of 301 container ships with a total transport capacity of 2.5 million TEU. The company employs around 14,000 people in the liner shipping segment at locations in 140 countries.
