The completed FSRU is scheduled to arrive in Gdansk Bay at the end of 2027

FSRU for Gdansk Bay is launched

A new FSRU ship has been launched at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea. It is due to arrive in Gdansk Bay at the end of 2027 and will become the centerpiece of Poland’s first FSRU terminal.

Polish operator Gaz-System announced the keel laying just a few months ago and now the structure has been launched for the first time. This means that the FSRU terminal program is reportedly nearing completion on schedule.

The ship is almost 295 m long and 46 m wide. The tanks hold 170,000 m³ of LNG. Once commissioned, the FSRU terminal will have a regasification capacity of more than 6 billion m³ of natural gas per year. The LNG delivered by ship to the Bay of Gdansk will then be fed into the national pipeline network as natural gas.

Ship expected in the Bay of Gdansk in 2027

Even though the ship already looks like a finished unit when it is launched, the contractors still have extensive work ahead of them in terms of equipping and integrating the process systems. According to Gaz-System, the most important next steps include the installation of the membrane system in the LNG tanks, which is responsible for the safe storage of the liquefied natural gas, as well as the installation of the regasification module for converting LNG into a gaseous state.

The next few months will see the commissioning and integration of the ship’s systems, including the connection to the shore power supply, the commissioning of generators and boilers and tests of the energy systems. Sea trials and gas tests will then be carried out to confirm the proper operation of the propulsion system, safety systems and regasification systems under operating conditions.

The completed FSRU is scheduled to arrive in Gdansk Bay at the end of 2027. The start of regasification services is scheduled for the first quarter of 2028.
