Damen delivers new dredger to Nigeria

Damen has delivered a cutter suction dredger to Nigeria. The new vessel, named “Lady Caroline”, is to be used for land reclamation work as part of the Niger City project in Delta State.

The Damen Shipyards Group has delivered a Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) 600 to 4Clans Nig Ltd. The cutter suction dredger is to be used on the Niger City Project in Asaba, in the Nigerian state of Delta. The vessel is part of Damen’s new generation of CSD series, in which various design enhancements are intended to improve efficiency, transportability and operability.

The stationary dredger, named “Lady Caroline”, will support land reclamation works for the Niger City Project on the River Niger. The CSD 600 is equipped with a 250 kW cutting head and has been adapted to meet the project’s requirements. These include an additional wedge section on the suction pipe, designed to optimise operation in shallow waters, as well as an adapter for connecting the pressure pipe.

With the CSD 600, 4Clans Nig Ltd is expanding its dredging capacity. “The arrival of the CSD 600 marks an important milestone for the Niger City Project. This investment underlines our aim to deliver a waterfront project of international standard that will create long-term economic opportunities for Delta State and Nigeria,” said Theodore Omalu, Executive Director of 4Clans Nig Ltd.

The dredger was dismantled at the shipyard in the Netherlands and transported to Nigeria in the form of individual pontoons and containerised components. Following delivery, the vessel was reassembled on site and commissioned with the support of Damen’s field service engineers. During this phase, the crew also received training and a briefing on its operation.

The Niger City Project is a large-scale development project in Asaba, in the Nigerian state of Delta. It is being built on the banks of the Niger River and involves extensive land reclamation work. A new urban district with residential, commercial and leisure facilities is to be built on the reclaimed land. The project is also intended to generate new economic activity and create jobs in the region.
