The GDWS, as the responsible authority, has declared the salvage of the “Verity” to be complete. The area around the scene of the accident has been reopened to shipping.
All clean-up work at the wreck site has been completed, the GDWS announced. The investigations and soundings have also been completed, meaning that the restricted area set up after the collision and sinking of the “Verity” has been lifted again.
The two wreck sections that were previously lifted were taken to a shipyard in Rotterdam on a transport barge. There they are to be disposed of properly.
Another missing person discovered in the wreck of the “Verity”
During the investigation of the wreckage with sniffer dogs, body parts of another crew member were found, according to a statement from the GDWS. It has not yet been determined who it is. The Dutch authorities are in close contact with the Federal Maritime Police regarding the identification.
The 91-metre-long “Verity” collided with the minibulker “Polesie” in the German Bight near the island of Helgoland on 24 October 2023 on its way from Bremen to Immingham in the UK and sank within minutes. Two sailors were rescued alive immediately after the accident, while the captain was found dead. Another crew member was found in one of the two wreck sections. This means that two people are still missing.
