Vard builds third cable carrier for Prysmian

Vard, the Norwegian shipyard subsidiary of the Fincantieri Group, has received an order for a third cable carrier from the Prysmian Group. Value: € 230 million.

After the “Monna Lisa”, currently under construction, and the “Leonardo da Vinci”, which will be delivered in 2021, this is the third cable-laying vessel that Vard is building for the Prysmian Group. According to Fincantieri, this is an advanced design based on the “Monna Lisa”. [ds_preview]

With a length of 185 m and a width of approx. 34 m, the new ship will be equipped with the most modern solutions for cable laying. This includes three so-called carousels with a total capacity of 19,000 tons, which means that the new vessel will have one of the highest cable loading capacities on the market. This will enable shorter transportation times from the factory to the construction site at sea.

Prysmian vessel with bollard pull of 180 tons

With a bollard pull of more than 180 t, the vessel will be able to perform complex installation work such as laying and burying cables (up to 4 cables) simultaneously, optimizing offshore activities. The vessel will be equipped with state-of-the-art DP3 positioning and seakeeping systems and will be delivered in Q4 2026.

According to Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of Fincantieri, this order is further proof of Fincantieri’s leading role in the offshore market.
