Vancouver plans to increase capacity by 50%

A new container terminal with three berths is being built in the Port of Vancouver. The project is being carried out by a consortium led by the Dutch hydraulic engineering firm Van Oord.

As announced by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, the “TerraMarine” consortium – comprising Van Oord, the Aecon Group, Flatiron Dragados Canada and the Carlsen Construction Group – has been selected as the preferred contractor for the “Roberts Bank Terminal 2” project. The project involves the construction of a new container terminal with three berths, as well as an industrial site of around 130 ha directly on the waterfront.

As things stand, TerraMarine is expected to sign a Design and Early Works Agreement with the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority in the third quarter of 2026. Following completion of the joint development phase, the actual construction contract (design-build contract) is due to be signed in the first quarter of 2028 to commence construction; completion is scheduled for the mid-2030s.

“We are proud to support the further development of Vancouver’s port infrastructure so that it can meet the growing demands of global trade,” said Ronald Schinagl, Managing Director of Dredging & Infra at Van Oord. “This further expansion of our presence in Canada underlines our commitment to the region, and we thank the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority for the trust they have placed in us. We look forward to working with our partners and local stakeholders to make this project a success.”

Peter Xotta, President and CEO of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, said: “As we move forward with the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project, the selection of a highly qualified construction partner represents a significant step forward. Canada has set itself the ambitious target of doubling exports to markets outside the US over the coming decade – and Roberts Bank Terminal 2 is crucial to achieving this goal.”

The Port of Vancouver is Canada’s largest port. Its infrastructure comprises 27 major terminals, which handle approximately 140 million tonnes of cargo and 3.5 million TEU annually.
