UKHO to present trial results at SMM 2026

At SMM 2026, the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) will host its Future of Navigation Forum, bringing together experts from across the maritime sector to discuss the technologies, standards and developments shaping the next generation of navigation solutions.

The programme of seminars and panel discussions will focus on digital navigation, data connectivity and the increasing importance of accessible, accurate and up-to-date navigational information. A key topic is the implementation of the S-100 framework, which is expected to enhance the exchange and presentation of navigational data, providing mariners with a more comprehensive picture of the maritime environment and supporting informed decision-making from ship to shore.

As part of the forum, UKHO will provide an introduction to S-100, outlining the framework’s capabilities and key implementation milestones. Two panel discussions will present initial findings from the organisation’s ongoing S-100 trial programme, examining how the standard performed in simulated and live navigational scenarios involving professional pilots and bridge teams.

Another seminar will focus on the future of passage planning, highlighting the transition from a static pre-departure process to dynamic berth-to-berth voyage planning. Visitors will also be introduced to UKHO’s latest digital navigation products, including Admiralty Digital Sailing Directions (ADSD) and Admiralty Virtual Ports (AVP).

Alongside the Future of Navigation Forum, visitors can explore the UKHO exhibition stand, where live demonstrations will showcase ADSD, AVP and the display of S-100 data in ECDIS. The sessions are intended to provide practical insights into the future of digital navigation and the implementation of emerging international standards.
