TKMS develops new air defence system for submarines

Another order worth millions for TKMS: in addition to submarines and the icebreaker “Polarstern II”, the shipyard in Kiel will also be building the IDAS air defence system in future.

After ordering six submarines each for the German and Norwegian navies, TKMS has now received a follow-up order: a contract has been signed with the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) to develop a guided missile system for the active self-defence of submarines.

The “Interactive Defence and Attack System for Submarines” (IDAS system) will be realised in close cooperation between Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Diehl Defence, the Kiel-based company announced.

IDAS is intended to fire guided missiles from a submerged submarine in order to be able to specifically engage attacking air targets. It is a globally unique technology that will revolutionise the protection of submarines and their crews.

“We are delighted that this innovation project can now also be launched. As Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, we are contributing to a completely new capability in the field of submarine self-defence,” says Oliver Burkhard, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems.
