In light of growing geopolitical security challenges, TKMS and the United Arab Emirates intend to cooperate in the field of underwater security. To this end, they have signed a memorandum of understanding.
TKMS and the EDGE Group have signed a joint Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as part of the state visit by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Germany.
The MoU forms part of the initiative agreed between the German Government and the UAE to strengthen cooperation in the defence and security sectors, and aims to explore the joint development of underwater surveillance and protection capabilities. Under the MoU, TKMS and EDGE intend to evaluate opportunities for establishing an integrated multi-system approach to underwater security, thereby sustainably strengthening the maritime defence capabilities of both partners.
The integration of multiple platforms and sensor systems could form the basis for generating a comprehensive situational picture, thereby offering a solution to the complexity of maritime threats. In this context, the parties intend to investigate how TKMS’s platform capabilities, combined with EDGE’s system expertise, can enable a suitable and effective surveillance and protection solution.
The collaboration takes place against a backdrop of heightened geopolitical security challenges, which have increased the need for maritime capabilities to maintain maritime security and ensure the uninterrupted flow of merchant shipping. The memorandum of understanding was signed in Munich by Miguel Ángel López Borrego, Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of TKMS, and Omar Al Zaabi, President – Commercial at EDGE.
“We welcome the initiative by the German government and the UAE to strengthen cooperation in the defence and security sectors. TKMS’s long-standing partnership with the UAE forms the solid foundation of our joint commitment. This cooperation will enable underwater surveillance and protection capabilities to be strengthened in the long term – an important contribution in light of the current security situation. TKMS is committed to continuing its long-standing involvement in the UAE and to contributing to the further development of the national security architecture,” says Oliver Burkhard, CEO of TKMS.
